If I had to take a guess as to how much money Humphrey Bogart’s persona has helped generate for the tobacco industry since the days of “Casablance”,
1 Trillion USD
would be my guess.
I am not joking. Multiply around 1 Billion a month by 12 times the years since he has been consecutively voted the number 1 actor of all times.
I know passionate nonsmokers who light up once in a while (usually when having a tall drink in their hands) and even though they may not get the lighter to work at first, they start hitting the HB pose from the moment they start inhaling.
In other words: Humphrey Bogart made smoking look so cool, that it was more about the image than the actual substance entering and damaging your body.
Only problem:
Bogart had just turned 57 and weighed 80 pounds (36 kg) when he died on January 14, 1957, after falling into a coma.
Had a picture of Humphrey during his final days gone viral back in those days, the world population of smokers would have probably halved.
